This summer, young artists across Cavan have joined hands to create “Our Community Garden”—an imaginative art project in celebration of Cruinniú na Óg 2024. Through a series of paper flower-making workshops, children in Virginia, Bailieborough, Belturbet, and Arva libraries, along with transition year students from local secondary schools, are crafting vibrant paper flowers that will blossom together in a community installation. Facilitated by the talented Marie Smith and supported by the advanced laser cutter from the Townhall Digital Suite, this project brings cutting-edge tools and creative expression to the heart of Cavan’s youth arts initiative.
The project’s workshops will introduce young participants to the art of paper flower-making, blending traditional crafting with technology. Marie Smith, a skilled facilitator, will guide the children and students through the creative process, while the laser cutter from the Townhall Digital Suite enables intricate designs and precise cutting, elevating each flower with refined detail. This technology allows young creators to explore new dimensions of art, combining digital tools with hands-on artistry to bring their visions to life.
This initiative spans local libraries and schools, bringing together students from St. Aidan’s College in Cootehill, St. Mogue’s College in Bawnboy, and Coláiste Dún an Rí in Kingscourt. Transition year students will collaborate with younger children, fostering mentorship and a sense of shared accomplishment. Together, their individual contributions will fill "Our Community Garden," a beautiful display representing unity, creativity, and growth.
One of the most touching contributions comes from the children of "The Den" class at St. Mary’s NS, Virginia. Their unique designs and creative input add a heartfelt dimension to the installation, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the project. Every flower from "The Den" class embodies the vibrant diversity and individuality within Cavan’s young community, contributing meaningfully to this shared artistic endeavor.
Funded by Creative Ireland and Cavan County Council through Creative Cavan, "Our Community Garden" is a testament to the commitment to arts and culture in local communities. Their support enables young people to explore creative outlets, connect through shared experiences, and showcase their talents in a public installation that celebrates community and creativity.
"Our Community Garden" is a powerful example of how art, technology, and collaboration can bring a community together. Each paper flower—meticulously crafted by hand and enhanced by laser cutting—symbolizes the unique contributions of each participant. As these individual creations come together, they reflect the diversity, creativity, and shared identity of Cavan.
As we look forward to Cruinniú na Óg 2024, we invite everyone in Cavan to enjoy "Our Community Garden." This installation will be a vibrant reminder of what we can achieve when we combine creativity with community support. Join us in celebrating the boundless potential of our young artists and the beauty of our shared garden!
