Robotics Competition in Templeport

Templeport Community Centre VEX IQ Competition on 24 April

Cavan Connects continues to build momentum for STEM education across the county, with a vibrant primary schools robotics competition held in Templeport Community Centre on Friday, 24 April 2026. The event brought together pupils and teachers from across West Cavan, celebrating not just technical skills but creativity, teamwork, and confidence in problem-solving.

Schools including St Mogue’s NS Currin, Ballyconnell Central NS, Kildallan NS, and St Aidan’s NS took part in the exciting showcase, where students designed, built, and programmed their own robots to complete challenges. A standout feature of the day was the involvement of students from St Mogue’s Secondary School, who supported and mentored the younger participants, creating a powerful peer-learning environment and strengthening links between primary and post-primary education.

The atmosphere in Templeport Community Centre reflected the energy and curiosity of the students, as teams worked collaboratively, tested ideas, and celebrated each other’s achievements. Events like this are not just about competition—they are about building confidence, fostering resilience, and opening pathways into future STEM opportunities.

The initiative was attended by Daniel Peeters, Cavan County Council Broadband Officer; Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr John Paul Feeley; and Chaps Adriano, Digital Champion and technology facilitator, all of whom engaged with students and highlighted the importance of digital skills for the future of the region.

This project forms part of the wider Cavan Connects mission to empower communities through digital innovation and inclusive education. It is supported by the PEACEPLUS Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), reflecting a strong commitment to cross-community collaboration and regional development.

The success of the Templeport event aligns with a growing wave of achievement in robotics education across Ireland. Recently, students from Dromore NS in Donegal made history at the VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis, demonstrating the global potential of young learners when given the right opportunities and support. Their achievement is a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished through initiatives like those led by Cavan Connects.

As Cavan Connects continues to expand its reach, events like this reinforce the importance of investing in young people, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and inspiration to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
