Kildallan GWS Adopts Netmore’s LoRaWAN for Advanced Metering
Kildallan Group Water Scheme (GWS) is setting an impressive example in Cavan by embracing cutting-edge technology to revolutionize its water management system. With the adoption of Netmore’s LoRaWAN networks for Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Kildallan GWS is automating meter readings, improving leak detection, and conserving valuable water resources.
Under the leadership of Chairperson Tadhg Murphy, Kildallan GWS has nearly completed its ambitious program of replacing outdated analog domestic meters with digital, remote-read meters. These new meters, such as the one fitted at member Martin Smith’s home with the help of his family, represent a significant step forward in water management.
The remote-read system relies on strategically placed "gateways," small antennae that pick up signals transmitted by the meters. However, West Cavan’s challenging topography of drumlins and forestry plantations posed unique obstacles. Thanks to the cooperation of GWS members, who provided access to high buildings and structures, the scheme has been able to steadily eliminate coverage black spots.
Currently, approximately 75% of the meters are successfully picked up by the network’s gateways. With ongoing efforts, the GWS is committed to achieving 100% coverage in the near future.
The integration of Netmore’s LoRaWAN technology delivers multiple advantages:
Automated Meter Reading: Reducing manual labor and improving accuracy.
Enhanced Leak Detection: Quickly identifying leaks to minimize water loss and repair costs.
Resource Conservation: Helping Kildallan GWS manage water sustainably and efficiently.
The LoRaWAN system not only benefits Kildallan GWS but also lays the groundwork for a collaborative network that other users can leverage. Similar to mobile phone mast systems, the growing network of gateways allows multiple users to piggyback off shared infrastructure, enhancing efficiency and scalability.
As Kildallan GWS continues its transition to smart metering, the next phase involves technology training to ensure the billing system integrates seamlessly with the collected data. A trial period with “dry runs” will be conducted to refine the process before official billing begins.
This pioneering effort by Kildallan GWS demonstrates how local communities can embrace advanced technologies to drive sustainability and innovation. For other GWSs looking to explore this system, Kildallan GWS is open to sharing their experiences and insights.
Stay tuned for updates as Kildallan GWS leads the way in modern water management!
