As the world faces growing environmental challenges, Cavan Connects is proud to support Climate Action Week 2024 with a range of initiatives designed to build a more sustainable future for our community.
This year, we're showcasing how digital technology and innovation are playing a vital role in Cavan's Smart Communities, particularly through our use of solar panels with battery storage, IoT climate monitoring devices, air quality sensors, and electric vehicle (EV) chargers.
Let’s dive into how these advancements are shaping a greener Cavan.
Under the Town and Village Scheme we started with the deployment of solar panels equipped with battery storage technology. These installations are a game-changer, capturing the power of the sun to generate clean, renewable energy and storing it for use during peak times or when the sun isn’t shining.
Incorporating battery storage makes our energy supply more reliable and resilient, helping to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions. These solar systems, installed across key community buildings and Connected Hubs, are actively contributing to Cavan’s goal of becoming a more energy-efficient county.
Internet of Things (IoT) technology is transforming the way we understand and respond to climate data in Cavan. By using IoT devices to monitor key environmental metrics, we can gather real-time data on everything from temperature and humidity to rainfall and soil conditions.
These sensors provide critical insights for both local authorities and residents, allowing us to make informed decisions on issues such as water management, flood prevention, and agriculture. With real-time climate monitoring in place, Cavan is taking proactive steps to adapt to climate change and mitigate its impacts.
As part of our climate initiatives, air quality sensors have been deployed across town to continuously monitor pollution levels and ensure a healthy environment for everyone. These sensors detect harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter, giving us real-time data on air quality.
By tracking this information, we can pinpoint areas where improvements are needed, reduce exposure to harmful pollutants, and work toward cleaner air for all. With the data collected from these devices, Cavan’s local authorities can take more targeted actions to improve air quality and protect public health.
To encourage the shift towards low-carbon transportation, Cavan is expanding its network of electric vehicle (EV) chargers. These charging stations are now available at key locations across the county, including at our Connected Hubs, making it easier for residents and visitors to choose electric vehicles.
Supporting EVs is a key part of Cavan’s strategy to reduce emissions from transport, one of the biggest contributors to climate change. With more accessible charging infrastructure, we’re helping to reduce the carbon footprint of daily commutes while promoting greener, more sustainable modes of transportation.
At Cavan Connects, we believe that the future of our community lies in the hands of all of us working together to protect the environment. Our Digital Champions are actively promoting the use of technology to support climate action, while our Connected Hubs provide the ideal environment for businesses, innovators, and citizens to collaborate on green initiatives.
