A Cushla My Own Native Land – A Powerful 360° VR Film Experience
We’re thrilled to announce a powerful new addition to the Cavan Connects Innovation Conference – from 11 AM - 1 PM. The screening of A Cushla My Own Native Land, a groundbreaking 360° virtual reality film that explores memory, beauty, and loss through the eyes of people living with dementia in Cavan.
This immersive short film, created by local artists Kim Doherty, Raquel Montero Calero, and David Grant, invites viewers to step into the lived experiences of residents from The Sullivan Centre, Cavan. Viewed through VR headsets, the film captures deeply personal stories of childhood, nature, and rural life, all set against the stunning Cavan landscape.
The project blends art and technology, with original music by Martin Donohoe and Fintan McManus, and technical direction by Camille Donegan, Sean Burns, and Jennifer Shortall. The voices of the residents guide the film, making it a moving tribute to memory and place.
Supported by Cavan County Council Arts Office and funded by the Local Live Performance Scheme (Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media), this project was made possible thanks to the generosity of the Sullivan Centre residents, families, and staff — especially Maya Mathew.
This is a must-see experience at the conference — a powerful example of how digital innovation can preserve stories, connect generations, and enrich community life.
